He Broke Into This Creepy ‘Restricted Area.’ What He Saw Is Actually Quite Eerie.

It's hard to imagine that there are any parts of New York City that are still left undiscovered. But between the Bronx and Riker's Island, there's a place that has been forgotten for so long, it seems like it has been lost in time.

Luckily, Redditor Victav was able to access the island. The photographer said he kayaked to the island and spent hours exploring. However, his venture was a pretty dangerous one: The island is monitored carefully by police, and people who get caught there are heavily fined.

Fortunately for us, we can see all of Victav's photos without assuming any of the risk. Check out these stunning images below.

It's called as North Brother Island, and together with South Brother Island, the pair measure about 20 acres.

The island was used in the 1850's by Riverside Hospital, which was used to isolate the victims of smallpox and other quarantinable diseases.

It was also used to house veterans after World War II as well as recovering drug addicts, but by the 1960's the facility had shut down permanently.

Now, it just looks like a scene from a horror film - but it's also pretty cool

Scenes from the island are extraordinarily creepy.

One of the island's most infamous residents was Typhoid Mary, the first American who was an asymptomatic carrier of the disease. She lived on the island for over two decades.
