27 Things We Do Today That Were Absolutely TABOO 40 Years Ago.

People over 50 have a particularly interesting vantage point on the world: They're old enough to remember antiquated social mores and old-fashioned etiquette, but young enough to be able to understand the world as it is today: A little less polite, a little more open-minded, and a lot different than it was before.

Reddit asked their users over 50 to describe what is shocking to them about living in the modern age, and their answers may surprise you. Some of the responses are classic "kids these days" fodder, but others are particularly insightful about the world in which we live. #16 will make you feel proud of the world we created.

#1. "When I was in junior high and the beginning of high school girls couldn't wear pants to school. This then changed to having to have a note to wear pants to school. Oh how times have changed."

#2. "53 here. Water bottles everywhere, in every meeting, in every social situation. Back in the day, no one carried around water bottles or go cups. You were expected to drink at home or your desk when you were thirsty. No one brought beverages to meetings, not even mugs of coffee."

#3. "Way past 50, one of the biggest changes is now many people live together without marriage. Sometimes having children without marriage."

#4. "Midst conversation people tend to their phones, Starting to read the news paper while somebody talks to you was a pretty big insult. "

#5. "That smoking would become so restricted in so many places. When I was young, if we had dinner guests and some were smokers, they smoked in our house without even asking."

#6. "Tattoos on anything but sailors' upper arms."

#7. "52 y.o. The lack of kids playing on the street and riding their bikes around the neighbourhood. Staying in your room all day and not venturing outside or visiting friends would be something that an ill person would do."
