Frightening Tumors Made Her Life A Living Hell, And Now She’s Asking For Help.

Jennifer Marie Hiles is a young woman from Huron, South Dakota that is living with arteriovenous malformations, or AVM. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke describes AVM as 'abnormal, snarled tangles of blood vessels that cause multiple irregular connections between the arteries and veins.'

Jennifer's condition extends into her nose and upper gums, and it makes daily life a struggle. She deals with problems such as major headaches, vision changes, and nose bleeds. On top of this, there are tumors on her cheek and upper lip, which often turns heads wherever she goes.

In the past, she attempted to hold jobs but in between the pain and constant bleeding, regular work was not possible. She has found success as a loving stay-at-home mother to two beautiful girls, Marlina Sky and Kiah Bliss. She has been with her husband Dustin VanOverschelde for 11 years, who has loved and supported her through about 21 AVM related surgeries.

'I just want to be able to spend all my time with my kids without people looking at me or calling me names,' Jennifer said in a video interview.

She has been working with her AVM doctor and plastic surgeon to make that happen. The procedures are, of course, very costly, but she has received some support from the community.

Blood Transfusions at 9 Months Old

Three months later, she began bleeding from her nose and gums, and no one knew why. When she was about 9 months, she started getting blood transfusions to replace the blood she was losing.

At 2 years old, she started undergoing surgeries that were supposed to help stop the bleeding, but they were unsuccessful.

The 'Birthmark' Expands

At 8, Jennifer's 'birthmark' began to expand. The mass between her eyes and upper lip also grew, and the family still didn't have answers. She underwent a series of laser surgeries and continued to lose blood.

Because of the bleeding from her gums, she constantly has to swish water. Her gums cannot hold her teeth and it isn't safe for her to get any dental work done, because one mistake and she can bleed to death.
