School Replaces Detention With Meditation, And The Results… Just Crazy.

If you remember the good old school days, you remember that detention was not something to mess with. Whether you've experienced it directly or indirectly, you knew you were to avoid it at all costs.

Detention isn't fun, despite what you may have seen in The Breakfast Club. It's real life punishment (and boredom) for students who have caused trouble. Well, not anymore for the students of Baltimore's Robert W. Coleman Elementary School. These lucky students no longer have to dread the possibility of getting detention as it's been replaced with something much more beneficial: meditation.

The grim detention classroom filled with stuffy air and negative moods has been replaced with the Mindful Moment Room. It's been described as a brightly colored “oasis of calm."

The Mindful Moment Room was initially introduced as a space for children to recenter and calm themselves before going back to class.

The meditation is a part of an after-school program called Holistic Me. It works in partnership with a local non-profit called the Holistic Life Foundation.

During this special time, children are taught to practice mindful meditation and breathing exercises. They are also encouraged to speak to behavioral professionals.
