At First He Thought It Was An Ordinary Dollar Bill… Then He Burst Into A Flood Of Tears.

Peter Billelo met his wife over 50 years ago, during a trip to visit his mother in Italy. Her name was Grace, and after they wed, they returned to Conneticut where they lived for many years. The pair were inseparable until 2001, when Grace was diagnosed with cancer.

She battled it for eight years, and in 2009, Peter came up with an idea: They should each sign a dollar bill, and he would keep them in his pocket, a sort of good luck charm or token of the hope he had for her survival. What happened next is heartbreaking - but this is one story that also comes with a happy ending.

After signing the bills, Peter kept them in his wallet. Unfortunately, while grocery shopping one day, Peter accidentally spent the dollar with Grace's name on it. He thought he'd never see it again. Sadly, in 2013, Grace finally succumbed to her battle with cancer. Devastated, Peter kept the missing dollar in the back of his mind, but knew he'd probably never find it.

Then, about three weeks ago, Peter took his granddaughter Ashley for lunch. He paid for their meal with a $10, and was handed three singles in return. His heart must have skipped a beat when he saw it.

"I said, 'Oh my god, Ashley, look," Peter Billelo said in an interview. "We started to cry. We were so happy to get the dollar back. I never thought I'd get that dollar back."

And though his wife is no longer with him, Peter Billelo can take comfort in knowing that a little part of her will always be close at hand.
