A Strange Fridge Appeared On The Streets Of This Town, The Reason Why Is Awesome.
Most people would be shocked to learn how much perfectly edible food restaurants and supermarkets routinely throw away. That food can’t be on the shelves anymore due to regulations and expiration dates, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it can’t be used to feed a hungry mouth.
In the small city of Galdakao, Spain, a community initiative has been started to save that wasted food. There is a large white fridge that sits on a city street, and people are encouraged to leave unused food there. Anyone who wants it can pick it up, and hopefully also leave something behind.
Organizer Alvaro Saiz says that they’ve already saved between 200kg and 300kg of food from the trash. He says that the initiative isn’t about charity; it’s simply about recovering waste that shouldn’t be in the trash.
“It doesn’t matter who takes it – Julio Iglesias could stop by and take the food,” Saiz explained. “At the end of the day, it’s about recovering the value of food products and fighting against waste.”
Next, here's a vending machine that feeds animals when trash is discarded.
