History is not merely a matter of the past. It enriches the present as well as our futures, and we should continue to study it. In doing so, we discover all that we have accomplished and what foolish mistakes we should not repeat if we truly wish to move forward.

The compilation below, which dates from 1905-1994 and includes a few present day comparisons, documents some of the world's unjust realities such as the internment of Japanese Americans following the attack on Pearl Harbor and some more lighthearted hallmarks such as the 21st anniversary of Friends. You will also find out which pinup model had an 18-inch waist and what the first African American female astronaut brought on her mission.

#1. 1905: An early look at the Asbury Park Boardwalk and beach in New Jersey.

#2. 1910s: Born Sarah Breedlove, Madam C. J. Walker became the first female self-made millionaire in America by producing cosmetics for other black women. In this colorized photo, Walker is pictured with her friends in a Ford. In addition to being extremely successful, she was also extremely generous; her will stipulated that two-thirds of her company's future net profits be donated to charity.

#3. May 11, 1910: American financier John Pierpont "J.P." Morgan, said to have hated being photographed, expresses anger toward a photographer.

#4. 1911: The first known photograph taken of Machu Picchu, an Inca city built atop the Andes mountains in Peru.

#5. 1924: Though many people know about the 1910 Great Flood of Paris, few people know that the Seine River had threatened to submerge the city again in subsequent years, including 1924. Here are some residents balancing on chairs at the Maisons-Laffitte racecourse.
