You’ve Seen These Iconic Paintings Before, But Look Closely… There’s A Twist.
Chris Rellas has given classic art a major fashion makeover. The former Georgetown University student started his Instagram account CopyLab when he was a sophomore. Rellas gives famous works like The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli a new look by giving her a black bathing suit with a crystal cross and Juan de Juanes’ Jesus in The Last Supper is seen holding a Hermes wallet.
Although altering the classical arts may seem like blasphemy to some people. Rellas believes fashion and classic art are similar. “An artist amasses cult followings just like a designer does. Both create something that either comes and goes in a flash, or sticks around and makes a huge mark on the industry,” explains Rellas.
For Rellas who uses Photoshop for most of his work, it was an obvious choice to mix the modern and old medium together.
The popularity of Copy Lab has given Rellas the opportunity to work with famous labels as well as with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
He boasts having over 29,000 Instagram followers.
