An Artist Was Asked To Blow Everyone’s Mind. This Is What He Came Up With…
Ai Weiwei is the world's best known Chinese contemporary artist and activist, known just as broadly for his work as he is for his tendencies towards political insurrection. He's a fascinating figure, and his new installation is appropriately mind-blowing.
Located at Paris' Le Bon Marché, the city's oldest department store, the exhibition includes 20 illuminated silk and bamboo dragons. The show is called "Er Xi," or "Child's Play," and takes its roots in the artists' childhood, a time when Ai first learned the art of kite making. You can see photos from "Er Xi" below.
The subject matter is intended to embrace the notion of two worlds colliding, reality serving as the backdrop for fantasy.
In addition to these hanging sculptures, Ai also installed work in the department store’s front windows and throughout the store.
There's a 65-foot dragon on the ground floor of the building, and many others installed by Ai and his team.
“Introducing the fantastic within a retail space strikes the imagination of customers, visitors, passersby,” said Ai in a statement. “We all lead parallel lives in this other world of dreams, fantasies and feats. We must learn to coexist with them as they are an integral part of our humanity; to embrace our mythology. Children know how to do this naturally. This exhibition speaks to our inner child."
The exhibit will run at Le Bon Marché until the end of February.
