This Badly Injured Toucan Desperately Needs Your Help.
Last month, a toucan was found in the forest of Grecia, Costa Rica and taken to a local vet clinic in Alajuela. The poor bird lost half of its beak after being attacked by a group of young children who laughed while they beat the defenseless animal with sticks.
Without its beak, the toucan is unable to feed itself and is helpless against predators, and cannot be returned to its natural environment. Female toucans choose their mates based on the color of their beaks, so reproduction also seems unlikely. The only solution is to create a prosthetic beak, but the Costa Rican government doesn't have the funds to save this animal.
A fund-raising account was set up for the bird on Indiegogo. With the money collected, a prosthetic beak will be made by OrthoPets, a company who specializes in orthotics and prosthetics for animals in Denver, Colorado.

The bird is receiving care at the Animal Rescue Centre ZooAve in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
The poor bird is being hand fed and can't even drink water without assistance.
It is unlikely that the bird will ever be returned to its home.
A prosthetic beak will allow the toucan to have somewhat of a normal life.
It's frightening to think of what some people are capable of. Many are calling to seek out the culprits responsible for this horrendous act, but currently there aren't any laws in Costa Rica under which this action can be punished.
