It Looks Like An Ordinary Bridge, But When It Opens Up… WOAH.

Residents in Poole, Dorset get to drive through the coolest bascule bridge in the world. The Twin Sails Bridge has two opposing triangles lying horizontally to be used as the passing road for commuters, connecting Poole to Hamworthy, England.

When the bridge leaves open up, they resemble the stunning and breathtaking structure of two giant yacht sails. It’s hard to believe it took almost three decades for construction to finally begin in 2011. It cost £18.5 million or over $26 million to build what looks more like a massive sculpture.

The leaves are powered by hydraulic rams.

The bridge is more than a stunning construction, it's considered an essential component for the economic growth of Poole.

The Twin Sails Bridge is the first triangular leaf-lifting structure in the world.

The bridge opens approximately once an hour to allow for maritime traffic.

Each leaf measures 23 meters. When opened it makes a 19 meter wide clearance for boats.

It takes approximately two minutes for the 65 tonne leaves to open.

The hydraulic rams open to 88 degrees.

The structure has received recognition for its original architecture.
