Bowker launched The Unseen, a company where "We imagine, develop and launch beautifully designed products, infused with colour technology rooted in material science and data."

Women and men who love to colour their hair, sometimes need to take a break. Despite spending good money to have the least damaging chemicals wreak havoc on your tresses, if it's coloured constantly, it's bound to dry out the hair. That's why it's best to be sure you are totally committed to your shade, rather than change it every few weeks.

But science seems to have realized that when it comes to expressing yourself through your hair, you shouldn't hold back. Alchemist Lauren Bowker has invented a hair dye that changes colour based on the temperature around. "When heat hits the pigment, or if the cool hits the pigment, it changes the bonds of the chemistry to give you a different color, so it’s like a chemical reaction," she told Dazed.

This is not the first time she has experimented with hues. She created colour-shifting crystal headpieces for Swarovski and digitized couture clothing to change with the touch of an app. Her latest hair dye is aptly named Fire.

The semi-permanent dye made its debut in London Fashion Week.

The colours will vary from strong jewel tones to the more soft pastels.

Bowker was inspired by the cult film The Craft where the witches hair change colour.

"I have always been into the occults and into mixing stuff. Even as a kid I used to mix bath potions, and was really hands-on with the stuff I had around me, making new products out of them, without even knowing I was doing it," she admits.

Her latest invention came from "messing around in the lab."

"If you have red hair and you’re in the wind it might go blue. So what we did was look at data patterns of weathers and the environment in different countries and tailor the colour changes to correlate with those," she reveals.

Bowker says "an idea is just an idea until you make it happen."

Bowker is not your typical scientist either. "Technology like Apple, Google, yes they are technology, but for me technology should be magic and shouldn’t be engineered all the time. To me, chemistry and science is witchcraft – and so it should be," she says.
