You've heard Fleetwood Mac’s "Gypsy" thousands of times, but never like this. Stevie Nicks performed and recorded it exclusively for Rolling Stone magazine. The rock n' roll goddess appeared on the cover of the magazine's January 16th issue for the first time since 1981.
Nicks explained the story behind "Gypsy" during at a concert in Long Island on January 25, 2015. The song was written after Fleetwood Mac rose to stardom quickly and she found herself with her own money. Nicks drove her dad's sports car and her parents were paying for her education, so she could do whatever she pleased with the money she earned. Nicks wanted to buy herself some clothes from Velvet Underground, a store in downtown San Francisco where all the rock stars like Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin got their clothes. But when she got there, she realized she couldn't afford anything. Nicks stood there in the store and fantasized about her future success and what her life would be like if she could afford it all.
